The Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class is officially called the G 580 with EQ Technology and has been promoted in Pakistan by Mercedes-Benz Pakistan and Shahnawaz. It retains the traditional G-Class silhouette, ladder-frame construction and rear-mounted spare-wheel housing, but replaces the petrol or diesel engine with four electric motors. Each motor drives one wheel through its own transmission, allowing the vehicle to control torque with exceptional precision on road and during low-speed off-road driving.
The reinforced chassis houses a battery of approximately 116 kWh, protected by a substantial underbody structure. Official international specifications list combined output of roughly 432 kW and very high torque, giving the Electric G-Class rapid acceleration despite its substantial weight. Its electric drivetrain also enables special functions such as G-TURN, which can rotate the vehicle on loose surfaces, and G-STEERING, which helps tighten the turning path during off-road manoeuvres. These functions should only be used in appropriate controlled conditions.
The G 580 remains a serious off-road vehicle rather than a conventional luxury crossover. It uses a front independent suspension, a rigid rear axle and adaptive damping, and its virtual low-range system is designed to provide controlled crawling without a mechanical transfer case. For Pakistan, this makes it attractive to buyers who want electric power without losing the G-Class image and capability. However, its width, weight and expensive body panels mean it is not ideal for narrow trails or careless use.
Inside, the Electric G-Class provides five seats, dual digital displays, modern MBUX functions and the upright driving position familiar to G-Class owners. Equipment can include premium leather, Burmester audio, a 360-degree camera, advanced driver assistance and rear entertainment, depending on the imported specification. The square body provides useful headroom, but the side-hinged rear door and externally mounted spare-wheel box require extra space behind the vehicle when parking.
Charging is the largest difference from a conventional G-Class. Owners should install a suitable wallbox before delivery and confirm the connector type, supplied cable, maximum AC rate and supported DC fast-charging performance. The large battery requires more energy and time to recharge than smaller electric SUVs, and real range can fall with high speed, hot weather, off-road use, large wheels and heavy climate-control demand. Public charging should be treated as support rather than the only charging plan.
Before purchase, verify the chassis number, battery and vehicle warranty, software version, charging equipment, tyre load rating, underbody protection and complete import documentation. The Electric G-Class offers Pakistani buyers a unique combination of heritage design, powerful electric performance and real off-road technology. Its disadvantages include very high cost, substantial weight, expensive tyres and body parts, limited charging infrastructure and the need for specialist diagnostics, but for buyers with secure home charging and authorised support it is one of the most distinctive luxury EVs available.
Buyers should also compare the Electric G-Class with the petrol G 500 or AMG G 63 based on actual use. The electric model offers smoother urban driving and unique off-road control, but remote touring is more dependent on charging access. For city use, its square shape and cameras help visibility, although parking space, gate width and the rear door's opening area still need to be measured carefully.
